What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

A Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Part C is a health insurance plan that is offered by a private company. These policies provide all of your Part A and Part B benefits similar to medicare but they also offer additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage. With a Medicare Advantage Plan your Medicare expenses are not paid by Original Medicare. A Medicare Advantage Plan pays for your medical costs, taking on the risk. In turn, Medicare pays your Medicare Advantage Plan a set monthly amount for your medical expenses.

What does a Medicare Advantage Plan cover?

A Medicare Advantage Plan is required to cover all medical expenses that are covered by Medicare. The Advantage comes from the additional services that are offered such as:

How much do Medicare Advantage Plans Cost?

Although Medicare Part-A is free for everyone, and Part-B has a monthly premium of $144.00 it still only covers 80% of medical expenses. With this type of health insurance plan you pay a monthly premium to your insurance provider, in some cases $0 premium, and the Medicare Advantage Plan covers the "20%" with fixed, predictable copays. Who is eligible for a Medicare Advantage Plan?

  • Anyone who is enrolled in Original Medicare, both Part A and Part B
  • If you are under the age of 65 you may be eligible depending on your health history
  • You need to live in the service area of your Medicare Advantage insurance provider
  • You cannot have End Stage Renal Disease when you apply
  • You cannot have a Medicare Supplement Plan when you apply

Different Types of Medicare Advantage Plans

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans

A HMO plan provides medical services at a discounted rate. In order to get this discount you have to agree to use a specific network of care providers.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans

You are not required to use a specific network of healthcare providers allowing you to get medical attention as soon as possible. Most PPO policies cover prescription drug costs.

Private Fee For Service (PFFS) Plans
