Commonly known as Medigap Insurance, Medicare Supplement Insurance is additional insurance offered by private insurance companies that covers the "gaps" that original Medicare policy does not cover. A Medicare policy typically only covers 80% of medical expenses. A Medicare Supplement policy will keep more money in your pocket by covering that additional 20%.
These policies only cover one individual per policy. If you want coverage for you and your spouse you will need to purchase an additional Supplement Insurance plan separately, be sure to ask for the "Household Discount" if both spouses will be enrolled with the same company.
These policies do cost a monthly premium regardless of the insurance company that you choose. However, these premiums differ based on the insurance company you enroll with. Comparing insurance companies can save you hundreds of dollars per month in premiums.
In order to be eligible for a Medigap policy you must already be enrolled in Medicare parts A and B and currently live in the state that the policy is offered. Normally you must be over the age of 65 as well to enroll but there are exceptions to this rule if you have a disability or certain diseases. v
